Meet Dave Oakes, Powelectrics New MD

Posted on 02 Mar 2018

Powelectrics recently welcomed Dave Oakes as our new MD! Dave will not be a stranger to many of our customers and suppliers, having been our Sales and Technical Director for the last 17 years. For those who are not familiar with our new leader, here as a brief introduction.

Hailing from Marple, Cheshire, on the edge of the Peak District, Dave initially studied Physics at UCLAN. After a brief spell designing sensing & control systems for large diesel engines, Dave joined the family telemetry business, Oakes & Co, 25 years ago.

There, he honed his craft, delivering remote data-gathering solutions to large utilities businesses such as Yorkshire Water. Initially focussed on radio telemetry, Dave was one of the first telemetry specialists in the UK to see the potential for GSM-based solutions and he was offering this brand new technology as early as 1998.

In 2001, he decided to join forces with Powelectrics, with whom Oakes & Co had enjoyed a long term two-way customer/supplier relationship. Powelectrics were an established and reputable sensor distributor and Dave was already seeing that the future lay in ‘connected sensors’. He was an early innovator in the now ubiquitous Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)!!

During Dave’s time as our Sales and Technical Director, he has overseen the creation of our award-winning Metron telemetry and the strategic move of Powelectrics from being a distributor to a manufacturer and end-to-end telemetry solution provider.

Dave initiated and managed the development of both Powelectrics Metron hardware and later, our data collection and viewing platform, MetronView. Using his strong technical background, together with close customer contact, he has always strived to ensure that our solutions are versatile and affordable. With his roots in a small, family business, Dave genuinely understands the value of long term relationships with customers, suppliers and colleagues.

Outside the office, he makes the most of his location near the Peaks, running, walking and cycling. He is currently training for a number of 100 mile cycle events, including the notorious ‘Tour de Manc’ a challenging route around Greater Manchester that takes in every hill it can find!

His 1st team days may be over, but he also enjoys over 40s cricket. Dave is also a traveller, currently up to 62 countries, with his most recent adventure being a two-wheeled tour of Rajasthan.

Dave is a true industry expert and we welcome him to our helm!! If you have any projects or applications you would like to discuss with Dave, please give him a call on 01827 310 666.
