Dave Oakes Looks To The Future On His First Anniversary as Powelectrics MD

Posted on 28 Jan 2019

Dave Oakes became Powelectrics MD last January, after 17 years as our Sales & Technical Director. Dave was a natural choice, having always been an innovator who listened to customer’s wish lists and sought out commercially viable ways to deliver. Over a decade ago, it was Dave who repositioned Powelectrics from specialist reseller to solution developer, visualising and delivering our own affordable, flexible m2m hardware and IoT platform. Let’s just say that we weren’t surprised when he brought a clear vision to the role and the practical know-how to achieve it!

“Becoming Powelectrics MD has made it possible to build on that vision of ‘enabling the internet of things’. I set out to position Powelectrics at the centre of a ‘connected sensor’ community, bringing together sensor manufacturers and developers of software-based data management solutions. I am delighted to say that our approach is having a huge impact on Powelectrics. 2018 was Powelectrics best year economically, which was of course fantastic, but to me it’s even more exciting that we are getting more new enquiries than ever, our pipeline has never been as strong and we have leapt into 2019 with a healthy order book. I would like to thank our customers, partners and suppliers for their valuable support in helping us achieve that.

I would also like to thank the exceptional Powelectrics team! 2018 brought us significant challenge and change. We have placed the focus firmly on delivering exceptional service, which has involved a degree of restructuring, creating and redefining roles and overhauling procedures. Well done to everyone for your positivity and practical ideas and your enthusiasm in embracing procedural and cultural change. Powelectrics have achieved our best year on record and a staff bonus scheme is now in place, recognising the many little instances where individuals have pushed the boundaries to make things happen.

Powelectrics have sought out new ways to engage with our connected sensor community. Our ‘Platform As A Service’ offer has been enthusiastically received, effectively delivering sensor suppliers the opportunity to gain additional and ongoing revenue, by selling connectivity along with their sensors. They simply use our reliable, robust and affordable hardware and software, badged as their own. In the process, they gain immediate market entry and fulfil an existing market need with no risk.

Equally, we are delighted with the growing interest in our ‘Sensors As A Service’ offer to platform providers, helping them bring reliable data from thousands of sensor types securely into their cloud, allowing those ‘data streams’ into the ‘data lake’ to assist with overall management. We have already delivered such projects, working with IBM, Nexiona and others. Our MetronView, ‘middleware’ is highly scaleable, already processing millions of readings/day and supporting over 140 protocols including MODBUS, MQTT, HTTP, TCP, UDP, SERIAL, SIGFOX, SNMP.

Underpinning these new approaches, we are regularly publishing application stories and product development news on our web site and social media. For those of you who are already connected to our LinkedIn and Twitter accounts, you will be aware of the enormous range of projects that we have delivered. For those who aren’t, I strongly encourage you to connect for regular news or look at our news pages.

All of this has set the scene for 2019 to deliver a stellar performance! Our Metron hardware has evolved recently to incorporate new features, such as pulse inputs and data logging. Development is in progress to continue expanding functionality and flexibility, starting soon with 4G narrow band communications (NBIoT). There’s plenty going behind the scenes so keep an eye out for new products and services. We are also introducing new business models, helping our customers overcome barriers that they may face. We understand that whilst we know that the equipment will work and deliver benefit, we need to prove it.

Every day is exciting as we deploy solutions into a range of sectors and it’s great to see how our clients are able to develop as they lower costs, introduce new revenue streams, or perhaps improve safety, reliability or efficiency. Our team is developing and we offer a great opportunity for the right individuals to come and help us grow. If you think Powelectrics is right for you then let’s talk. I am so proud of what the Powelectrics team have achieved and truly excited about 2019, which has started robustly, with Q1 and Q2 already giving us great confidence.”
