No Skating On Thin Ice for Christmas Shoppers!

Posted on 04 Jun 2018

It’s hard to think about Christmas as the UK enjoys unseasonal warmth, but our latest application story is an ‘Internet of Things’ Christmas tale!

Temporary ice rinks are an increasingly popular festive activity in towns and shopping centres over the Christmas period. The temporary and outdoor nature of the infrastructure mean rinks can melt if they not managed closely, making them unsafe and unusable and so costing event-holders heavily in lost revenue during a short season.

Powelectrics have delivered a connected sensor solution to monitor external, temporary ice rinks and help ensure that the skating season runs smoothly for Christmas shoppers.

For this m2m project, various parameters were measured by sensors, including the temperature of water flowing into and out of the system, ambient air temperature and wind speed. The sensor data was transmitted every half hour by Powelectrics award-winning Metron telemetry. It was sent to our Metron View web-based data platform, where it was visible via the internet to the event managers. They could easily see if the ice rink was performing correctly and take action if adjustments or maintenance were necessary.

Powelectrics telemetry is used in a wide range of Industry 4.0 remote condition monitoring applications. Remote monitoring devices are compatible with thousands of sensors offering a 4-20mA output.

Metron View is Powelectrics cloud-based datalogger with customisable dashboards and bespoke reporting. Data and alerts can be easily viewed on a computer, tablet or phone. Metron View currently processes 2.5 million sensor readings/day and supports over 140 protocols including MODBUS, MQTT, HTTP, TCP, UDP, SERIAL, SIGFOX, SNMP and many more. It has an API for simple integration to other software.

Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) operating at the centre of the ‘connected sensor’ community. We offer 25 years’ experience in the world of sensors, our own award-winning telemetry devices, a standalone data platform, with an API to connect with other software and a wealth of experience integrating third party devices.
