Powelectrics Connected Sensor Solution Solves Situation for Soggy Solar Site!

Posted on 21 Jan 2019

Powelectrics supply ‘connected sensor solutions’ to a broad range of of industries and applications, enabling the Internet of Things for our customers to help them improve efficiency, reduce breakdowns and increase margins.

We often provide condition monitoring and alerts to maintenance companies, so that action can be taken before a breakdown occurs. One such Industry 4.0 project was recently delivered to large scale provider of maintenance services to the renewable energy sector. Our customer maintains solar installations throughout the UK on behalf of asset owners. Many of these are institutional investors who make profit by generating electricity and selling it to the National Grid for a Feed-In Tariff.

Our customer is responsible for ensuring that solar installations are well-maintained and remain economically productive. However, one site suffered a flood, which damaged inverters, tranformers and cables and effectively stopped energy production. This large installation could not generate or sell electricity until the parts were repaired and replaced.

To prevent this happening again, our customer asked Powelectrics to install an IoT remote flood warning solution. We used our own SPS hydrostatic pressure sensors to measure rising water levels at key locations, protected from elemental and pest damage by a stilling tube. The sensors are connected to independently solar-powered Metron2 telemetry devices, which reports hourly to Powelectrics MetronView cloud. Authorised users can receive data and alarms securely on any web-enabled device.

In the image you can see the Metron2, an enclosure containing the solar-powered battery back-up and the stilling tube containing the sensor.

This m2m system has already been proven during some heavy rain in December!! The alarm was triggered and the electrical equipment isolated to avoid damage. Our customer was delighted … and our pension funds remain safe!

Metron2 telemetry devices can be supplied for use with external power, integral battery and solar power. All Metron2 devices can be remotely configured via MetronView or set-up by us, prior to dispatch or simply configured on site, using the integral display. No programming skills are needed. Metron2 offers 4 analogue inputs, optional 5 pulse inputs and 2 optional relay outputs and they are supplied in a robust, weatherproof IP67 enclosure.

MetronView, is Powelectrics standalone platform, with customisable dashboards, reporting & alarms. MetronView processes millions of readings/day and supports over 140 protocols including MODBUS, MQTT, HTTP, TCP, UDP, SERIAL, SIGFOX, SNMP. It also has a simple API for integration to other platforms.

Powelectrics connect the world of sensors and the Internet of Things. Our solutions are employed in a wide range of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) remote level and condition monitoring applications. We welcome the opportunity to discuss your application: +44 1827 310 666
