Powelectrics Deliver A Connected Sensor Solution For Hazardous Waste Management

Posted on 11 Jul 2018

Our customer is an established and fast-growing hazardous waste business. They were looking for a reliable and efficient way to collect corrosive acid waste, a by-product of printing official documents, from a large GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) tank on their customer’s site.

Due to the hazardous nature of the waste, it could only be stored in this secure tank. If the tank reached capacity, production would have to stop, which would impact on contractual obligations. The secure nature of the documents being printed also meant that site access needed to be minimised.

Powelectrics delivered a connected sensor solution to accommodate the needs of the waste collection company and their customer. A non-contact radar level sensor was used, installed on the exterior of the tank. It avoided contact with the acidic tank contents, maintained the integrity of the tank and ensured that production was not interrupted during installation.

The new m2m solution means that hourly level data is sent, via Powelectric’s award-winning Metron2 telemetry device, to our MetronView cloud. A user-defined ‘high’ level advises our customer when to schedule collections. This Industry 4.0 solution has meant that the tank never overfills and collections are scheduled to minimise disruption.

Powelectrics telemetry is used in a wide range of Industry 4.0 remote level and condition monitoring applications. Remote monitoring devices are compatible with thousands of sensors offering a 4-20mA output.

Metron View is Powelectrics cloud-based datalogger with customisable dashboards and bespoke reporting. Data and alerts can be easily viewed on a computer, tablet or phone. Metron View currently processes 2.5 million sensor readings/day and supports over 140 protocols including MODBUS, MQTT, HTTP, TCP, UDP, SERIAL, SIGFOX, SNMP and many more. It has an API for simple integration to other software.

Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) operating at the centre of the ‘connected sensor’ community. We offer 25 years’ experience in the world of sensors, our own award-winning telemetry devices, a standalone data platform, with an API to connect with other software and a wealth of experience integrating third party devices.
