Powelectrics Deliver a Pump Station Control Solution for MOD Knook Camp

Posted on 20 Jun 2018

Powelectrics has delivered a remote monitoring and control solution to help keep MOD Knook Camp military personnel supplied with water during training.

Knook Camp is the accommodation centre for Salisbury Plain’s Army Training Estate in Wiltshire, used year-round by the Regular Army, TA and Cadet Forces.

Residents need a supply of water for washing, cooking, heating etc whilst they are in training. The barracks are supplied by a service reservoir, which is a huge tank full of clean, treated water. This is fed by a pumping station with a borehole pump. The service reservoir and the pumping station are situated about a mile apart.

To avoid laying cable over this huge distance, Powelectrics have supplied a low power radio telemetry monitoring and control solution. A level sensor in the water reservoir tank transmits regular level readings, via solar-powered radio telemetry to a receiver with a PLC.

When the level reaches a user-defined low threshold, the PLC switches the pump on. Likewise, when the level at the reservoir reaches a defined high level, the PLC switches the borehole pump off. The solution was the most cost-effective way to ensure that trainees have a consistent supply of clean, fresh water.

Radio telemetry has been around for many years. It is a great way to send signals for sensors and alarms, especially when it is impossible or impractical to run a cable. We have over 25 years’ experience in radio telemetry and we have designed, supplied, installed, commissioned and supported systems from Ilkley to Istanbul!

Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) operating at the centre of the ‘connected sensor’ community. We offer 25 years’ experience in the world of sensors, a wealth of experience integrating third party devices and we are expert in a range of communication technologies. Powelectrics have designed our own award-winning telemetry devices and developed a standalone data platform, with an API to connect with other software.
