Powelectrics Energy Metering Solution Cuts Costs for Caravan Park Management and Caravan Owners

Posted on 29 Jun 2018

Powelectrics have provided a remote gas and electricity metering solution for a large caravan site near Skegness. Our customer was looking for a way to differentiate themselves from other local operators, lower operating costs and reduce the environmental impact of energy waste.

Prior to the Powelectrics m2m smart metering installation, caravan owners would be charged a fixed annual rate for energy, based on typical usage plus a contingency to cover higher usage and energy price increases. The system penalised people who didn’t use much energy and they were effectively subsidising the heavier users, such as people who lived in their caravans for most of the year or rented them out most of the time.

This system was risky to the site owners in other ways too. People could use more energy than they had paid for and, as energy fees were agreed in advance, the owners would lose out if prices went up.

There were labour costs and risks too, as the site used LPG cylinders, which had to be manually changed for each caravan and if they are not handled properly, gas could escape and create a risk of explosion or fire.

Our customer decided to convert the site gas supply to bulk LPG, supplied from a central tank via underground pipework. Powelectrics supplied both the gas and electricity meters for around 500 caravans. Readings are now taken daily and sent via our technology to the cloud. Data is sent initially to our MetronView web platform and then via an API to a portal designed specifically for this application.

This portal allows data to be viewed via the web on a computer, tablet or smartphone by both the site management and the individual caravan occupants.

Site management use the data to provide accurate billing to customers, charging them fairly for the energy that they have actually consumed. They can use historical data to see behavioural trends to help with planning and they can amend tariffs in line with supplier price changes.  Levels on the central LPG tank are also visible, enabling deliveries to be scheduled, so that supplies never run out. They have reduced their administration costs and no longer need to use resource to physically change LPG cylinders.

Guests can see their current balance, average daily usage, top up their energy credit on line via the portal and see their top up history. As you can imagine, this has a significant impact on usage. Fewer people will leave the heating on all day, whilst the windows are open, when there is a direct financial consequence. More responsible energy usage also benefits the environment.

The new IIoT solution has been a great success. Our customer has reduced their business risk and holidaymakers are getting a fairer deal.

This kind of energy monitoring can be useful in any environment where energy from one source is used by several parties, such as student accommodation, care homes, schools and shared office spaces.

Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) operating at the centre of the ‘connected sensor’ community. We offer 25 years’ experience in the world of sensors, our own award-winning telemetry devices, a standalone data platform, with an API to connect with other software and a wealth of experience integrating third party devices.
