Powelectrics Help Biodiesel Producer Reduce Logistics Costs To Be Even Greener!

Posted on 06 Jul 2018

Powelectrics have been working with a major UK biofuel producer to help them deliver product to newer UK stores of a huge grocery/ general merchandise retail chain.

Biofuel can be an alternative to diesel, produced via biological processes, like anaerobic digestion, rather than the geological processes that create fossil fuels. The source material is renewable, so it is viewed as an environmentally-friendly alternative.

In line with environmental objectives, newer superstores are often designed to source part of their overall power from biodiesel-fed generators. Our customer supplies such stores and they need to ensure that the fuel tanks never run out.

The m2m solutions involve fitting biodiesel tanks with Powelectrics SPS hydrostatic level sensors. These take tank level readings every 2 hours, which are sent via our Metron2 telemetry hardware to the cloud. The tanks may not be close to mains power, so solar-powered devices are used on this project.

The data is reported initially to MetronView, which is a stand-alone cloud-based datalogger with customisable dashboards and bespoke reporting. It is ideal for many applications, but it also has an API for simple integration to other software.

For this project, our customer uses Powelectrics Tank Monitoring System (MetronTMS), a Powelectrics portal designed specifically for customers who deliver/ collect bulk gases, liquids, powders or granules from tanks. As with MetronView, you can see data and receive alerts securely on a computer, tablet or smartphone, but MetronTMS offers additional functionality for order processing and logistics planning.

MetronTMS includes theft and leakage alerts and the facility to set thresholds on individual tanks to alert you when tanks are reaching amber and red alert levels and even predict when individual tanks will need filling, based on recent usage. Colour coded tank locations can be plotted on a map, by postcode, for simple logistics planning.

Data may also be used to verify delivery dates and quantities for invoice reconciliation and to identify unauthorised deliveries or collections from competitors. MetronTMS will also alert you if a device has not reported in.

This IIoT solution has proven to be a great success. Industry 4.0 technology has helped reduce our customer’s logistics and admin costs. It also allows them to differentiate themselves through enhanced customer and ensuring that the major household retailer can meet their environmental commitments.
