Powelectrics Industry 4.0 Solution Ensures Home Heating and Ventilation System DeIivers Environmental and Cost Benefits

In recent years Powelectrics have partnered with an instrumentation company with extensive experience measuring and controlling environmental parameters. These include temperature, humidity, CO2, pressure, voltage, current, energy and wind speed/direction.

One recent IoT project involved the monitoring of environmental conditions in a new housing development. These innovative homes incorporate highly energy-efficient mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems for air exchange and a constant supply of fresh, filtered air. 

To ensure the efficiency of the heat and ventilation systems, Powelectrics were invited to engineer an m2m solution, connecting a range of sensors to the cloud to measure temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide in the living area, master bedroom and bathroom.

Monitoring and controlling temperature is well-known as a mechanism for moderating household energy, to reduce both environmental impact and heating bills.

High humidity levels may indicate issues with the plumbing, heating or ventilation, which need attention before they impact on energy usage and bills or even cause structural damage. There are also significant health issues associated with dampness in a home, especially for the elderly or unwell, who may be more susceptible to viruses and toxins.

Household appliances such as gas fires, boilers, central heating systems, water heaters and cookers can all produce carbon dioxide. The CO2 is measured to ensure the ventilation systems are working, for environmental and economic reasons, but also for occupant health, as excess CO2 can affect concentration and cause headaches, insomnia and nausea.

For this Industry 4.0 project, readings are taken every 15 minutes and sent via 169MHz radio to a base station and then on to Powelectrics MetronView cloud. Data can be viewed securely on any web-enabled device by authorised users and any issues with the heating and ventilation dealt with promptly by maintenance services. This IoT solution also protects occupant health, alerting users to issues with humidity and CO2 before they become dangerous to occupants.

MetronView, is Powelectrics standalone platform, with customisable dashboards, reporting & alarms. MetronView processes millions of readings/day and supports over 140 protocols including MODBUS, MQTT, HTTP, TCP, UDP, SERIAL, SIGFOX, SNMP.

MetronView also offers a simple API, so data can be collected by other software. This can be done by customers or Powelectrics can create application-specific portals for you. Examples include: tank management, energy metering, vending machines, train condition monitoring and waste compactors.
