Powelectrics Industry 4.0 Solution Helps Maintain UK ‘Balance Of Power’

Posted on 09 Apr 2019

Powelectrics have delivered a ‘connected sensor’ solution to a customer with several sites generating standby power for National Grid. As the UK becomes more reliant on intermittent renewable power generation, a need has been created for highly responsive, on-demand generation capacity to ensure a secure, sustainable electricity system for the nation.

This image shows a site with 200, 000 litre kerosene tanks. These fuel engines which generate electricity for the grid. The ‘power response’ is required immediately, whenever the Grid needs top-up energy. It is essential that these huge fuel tanks never run out! Powelectrics IoT solution reports the tank levels hourly and provides alarms when tanks reach user-defined low levels.

For this m2m project, ATEX sensors were used in the kerosene tanks. Level readings are transmitted via Powelectrics award-winning Metron2 telemetry device. The Metron2 is in a safe area outside the ATEX zone and ATEX barriers were used.

There are two tanks on this site, but each Metron2 device monitors up to 4 tanks and sends data using a single sim, making it particularly cost-effective on multi-tank sites. Metron2 can be supplied for use with external power, integral battery and solar power and offer 4 analogue inputs, optional 5 pulse inputs and 2 optional relay outputs.  Supplied in a robust, weatherproof IP67 enclosure & operating from - 25 to +65°C, they are suited to vast range of environments and applications.

Data is reported Powelectrics MetronView cloud, which offers customisable dashboards, reporting & alarms. This ensure that tank levels are known and that deliveries are scheduled to ensure the tanks never run out. That, in turns, means that top-up power will always be available at short notice when the nation needs it!

MetronView is a highly secure and scalable IoT solution, currently processing millions of readings every day, whilst only using a fraction of its processing capabilities. MetronView supports over 140 protocols including MODBUS, MQTT, HTTP, TCP, UDP, SERIAL, SIGFOX, SNMP.

Metron2 devices have an interactive screen, which is great for on-site testing/configuration and local readings. However, for this project, our customer needed an ‘augmented solution’ local display.

This ‘MetronAS’ solution offers a more sophisticated graphical interface on site, with a full-colour, high resolution graphical display and allowing extensive customisation, including customer graphics & representations of actual process, such as tanks and levels.

MetronAS is ideal where more sophisticated calculations and commands are required, offers instant response to programmable inputs/events and triggers immediate alarms/beacons.

Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Internet of Things. Our ‘connected sensor’ solutions are employed in many industries including chemical, pharmaceuticals, Adblue, fuels, oils, LPG, lubricants, food and beverage, waste &recycling, landfill & leachate, agriculture, utilities, pumping and environment, rail and security.
