Powelectrics M2M Solution Helps Spare Locals from Sewer Stinks and Methane Menace

Posted on 24 Oct 2018

Powelectrics have delivered several projects for a major supplier of oil industry and environmental services aimed at protecting critical infrastructure and making businesses more resilient to unexpected events. Our projects have involved connecting a variety of sensors to the cloud, to enable critical data and alarms to be seen by the right personnel and timely action to be taken.

One particular project has involved a sewage plant that occasionally emits foul odours, much to the discontent of local residents.  Not only are the smells unpleasant, but methane and other gases can also be dangerous to health, causing dizziness, nausea, drowsiness and headaches. … and of course, methane is a flammable gas.

Given the health and environmental risks posed, there was a clear need to develop a solution that allowed for speedy responses when the emissions occurred.

This Powelectrics ‘connected sensor’ solution involved fitting ATEX-approved methane sensors on the plant. These were connected to our award-winning Metron2 telemetry devices, installed behind suitable ATEX barriers. Data is sent every10 minutes to our MetronView cloud and is stored and available to be viewed securely on any web-enabled device.

With this Industry 4.0 solution fitted, key personnel are alerted if methane levels rise above a user-defined threshold, so that action can be taken immediately. Management are also alerted if the remote monitoring devices fail to communicate, indicating potential damage or disconnection. Management are now compliant with legal and social requirements. Site staff and residents are protected from the effects of noxious gases.

For this project mains-powered Metron2 devices were used. Powelectrics also supply units that are battery and solar powered, for applications where there is no power available.

MetronView, Powelectrics ‘middleware’ is a cloud-based datalogger with customisable dashboards and bespoke reporting. MetronView processes 2.5 million readings/day and supports over 140 protocols including MODBUS, MQTT, HTTP, TCP, UDP, SERIAL, SIGFOX, SNMP. The simple API allows MetronView data to be collected by other software. This can be done by customers or Powelectrics can create application-specific portals for you. Examples include: tank management, energy metering, vending machines, train condition monitoring and waste compactors.

Powelectrics telemetry is used in a wide range of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) remote level and condition monitoring applications. Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Internet of Things operating at the centre of the ‘connected sensor’ community. We offer 25 years’ experience in the world of sensors as well as our own award-winning telemetry devices, a standalone data platform, ability to connect with other software and a wealth of experience integrating third party devices.
