Powelectrics Metron Telemetry Is Being Used By IBM To Connect Sensors to IBM Cloud

Posted on 30 Apr 2018

Powelectrics have been working with Chris Gage, Digital Lead, for IBM Industrial Products to develop ‘connected sensor solutions’ for a number of condition monitoring applications.

IBM are using Powelectrics award-winning Metron telemetry devices to connect sensors to their IBM Cloud. IBM Cloud is a sophisticated web-based ‘platform as a service’ (PaaS) designed to pull together multiple data streams and analytics in a user-friendly, super-flexible format from processing basic sensor readings to a broad range of Watson AI and machine learning APIs to build your own applications.

The benefit of Powelectrics’ Metron is that it is compatible with thousands of sensors offering a 4-20mA output, from flow, level & temperature to pressure, vibration, pH and many more.

Metron2 offers several advantages. It is robust and proven, with tens of thousands of devices in the field globally, some having been in service for over 10 years. Metron2 offers mains, solar & battery power options and can take readings from up to four sensors. Devices are remotely configurable via Powelectrics’ MetronView platform and can be tested on site using the integral display. Devices can also be set-up/reconfigured locally using a simple wizard. No programming skills are needed.

For IBM’s remote condition monitoring applications, readings are taken and sent automatically by Metron2, at user-defined intervals. The data is reported via the mobile phone network to  Powelectrics’ MetronView platform. A simple API allows the data to be pulled into IBM Cloud for further application-specific processing.

Powelectrics MD, Dave Oakes is delighted with the output of this partnership. "This is another great example of Industry4.0 in action, empowering the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) via cooperation and development within a community of m2m businesses."

MetronView is also a stand-alone cloud-based datalogger for applications requiring simpler reporting and presentation, with customisable dashboards and bespoke reporting. Data and alerts can be easily viewed on a computer, tablet or phone.

MetronView currently processes 2.5 million sensor readings/day and supports over 140 protocols including MODBUS, MQTT, HTTP, TCP, UDP, SERIAL, SIGFOX, SNMP and many more.

As with IBM Cloud, MetronVIEW can interface via a simple API with other management & control systems, such as Navision, SAP and SCADA.
