Powelectrics Project Prevents Petroleum-Pinching!

Posted on 13 Aug 2018

A Powelectrics connected sensor solution is preventing fuel theft from petrol forecourts. Our customer’s forecourts are not open 24 hours a day and unfortunately, large quantities of fuel had been syphoned from their underground storage tanks at night, and in some instances, even in broad daylight when the station was open!!

CCTV footage had not been of sufficient quality to identify the offenders or vehicles involved, so they decided that an obvious visible and audible alarm, acting as an immediate deterrent, would be the best way to stop a robbery in progress and discourage future occurrences.

Powelectrics delivered an alarm solution using EGE sensors and our own award-winning Metron2 telemetry devices. Forecourts are ATEX zones, so the sensors are ATEX-rated and the solution incorporates ATEX barriers between each sensor and the associated Metron2. Metron2 m2m devices have four inputs, so they can monitor up to four tanks, making them particularly cost-effective in multi-tank environments. The Metron2 units are located outside the ATEX zone.

If the fuel tanks are subjected to unauthorised access, the Metron2 generates an alarm signal, which activates beacons and sirens inside the shop & outside the building. Powelectrics have integrated this alarm signal directly into the customer’s intruder alarm system, which in turn can be linked to a 24-hour security monitoring service or directly to the local police. Email and SMS alerts can also be sent to key personnel via Powelectrics MetronView cloud.

Powelectrics telemetry is used in a wide range of Industry 4.0 remote level and condition monitoring applications. Remote monitoring devices are compatible with thousands of sensors offering a 4-20mA output.

Metron View is Powelectrics cloud-based datalogger with customisable dashboards and bespoke reporting. Data and alerts can be easily viewed on a computer, tablet or phone. Metron View currently processes 2.5 million sensor readings/day and supports over 140 protocols including MODBUS, MQTT, HTTP, TCP, UDP, SERIAL, SIGFOX, SNMP and many more. It has an API for simple integration to other software.

Powelectrics are UK distributors for the EGE range of flow and level sensors and proximity switches. The EGE ranges covers sensors that can withstand extremes of temperature (-230 to +250) and pressure as well as devices for ATEX environments.

Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) operating at the centre of the ‘connected sensor’ community. We offer 25 years’ experience in the world of sensors, our own award-winning telemetry devices, a standalone data platform, with an API to connect with other software and a wealth of experience integrating third party devices.
