Powelectrics Solution Facilitates Civilian Protection at MOD’s Otmoor Rifle Range

Posted on 31 May 2018

A Powelectrics connected sensor solution has been used to improve the warning system used to advise civilians when the Otmoor military firing range is in use.

Otmoor is a beautiful and historic wetland area. It attracts many civilian visitors, as it is easily accessed from several beautiful Oxfordshire villages and much of the area is now an RSPB nature reserve, providing habitat for many rare species of birds and butterflies. The RSPB reserve is crossed by several walking paths, which are accessible to the public.

Otmoor has also been a military training area since 1920 and the current rifle range adjoins the RSPB reserve. The MOD need to ensure that members of the public are not accidently injured by military personnel training on the rifle range.

Prior to the Powelectrics telemetry being installed, a designated Flag Official would need to ride the perimeter of the rifle range on horseback and raise red flags. As the area is wetland and the perimeter is lengthy, this process could take two to four hours.

Now the MOD use a system of solar-powered beacons, which emit bright, flashing, strobe lights to alert the public that the range is in use and that they must not pass. For this project, Powelectrics designed a panel, which uses radio telemetry to send a signal to the beacons and switch them on. The beacons then respond to confirm that they are on and this is shown by lights on the custom-built panel in the control room.

It’s another win-win for m2m solutions! Now that the beacons can be activated immediately, the public areas remain accessible for the longest period possible and Flag Official (and his horse!) can be deployed in more productive ways. The beacons are much more visible and less vulnerable to the elements, so the public is far better protected.

Powelectrics remote monitoring technology is used in a wide range of applications from tank level monitoring to flood protection schemes, condition monitoring of essential kit and processes to developing new business models using monitoring as a value-added service.

Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) operating at the centre of the ‘connected sensor’ community. We offer 25 years’ experience in the world of sensors, our own award-winning telemetry devices, a standalone data platform, with an API to connect with other software and a wealth of experience integrating third party devices.
