Powelectrics Telemetry Solution & MetronTMS Portal Helps Get Brewers Waste Recycled Into Animal Feed

Powelectrics ‘connected sensor’ solutions are used in a broad range of bulk collection and delivery applications, from fuels and adblue to cryogases, fertilisers and waste products. We have worked extensively with a European market leader in livestock nutrition, which sells many millions of tonnes of animal feed annually.

As well as delivering a variety of feeds to farmers, they collect waste products from certain manufacturing processes to convert into animal nutrition. One such source is spent grain from the brewing process, an insoluble cereal residue that is separated from the mash before fermentation. Barley in particular offers a high concentration of protein and fibre.

Breweries collect spent grain in large tanks. They may have existing level sensors with local gauges. Our technology can be retro-fitted to these or Powelectrics can supply sensors. We offer 25 years’ experience in the world of sensors, representing over 100 respected manufacturers.

Hourly readings are reported via our award-winning Metron2 telemetry devices. In most cases, external power is available, but Metron2 is also supplied battery and solar powered. Units can be configured prior to dispatch, via our platform or on site, using the integral screen. No programming skills are required.

Data is reported initially to MetronView, Powelectrics standalone cloud with customisable dashboards, reporting and alerts. MetronView is ideal for many applications, but it also has an API for simple integration to other software, which is the case for this project. This m2m solution uses one of Powelectrics application-specific portals, MetronTMS (Tank Monitoring System) - designed for customers who deliver or collect bulk gases, liquids, powders or granules to/from tanks.

As with MetronView, authorised users get data and alerts securely on any web-enabled device, but MetronTMS offers additional functionality for order processing and logistics planning. These include the facility to set thresholds on individual tanks to alert you when tanks are reaching amber and red alert levels. MetronTMS can even predict when individual tanks will need filling, based on recent usage. Colour coded tank locations can be plotted on a map, by postcode, for simple logistics planning.

Data may also be used to verify delivery dates and quantities for invoice reconciliation and to identify unauthorised deliveries or collections from competitors. MetronTMS can be configured to send theft and leakage alerts and alert you if a device has not reported in.

Our customer has installed this Industry 4.0 solution at many supplier and customer sites and at their network of local collection depots. Now that they can see the levels in the many tanks within their collection and delivery operation, they can plan logistics to minimise expense and ensure that supplier tanks don’t over-spill and customer tanks don’t run out.

MetronTMS is only one example of a Powelectrics developing an Internet of Things portal for a specific application. Other examples have included energy metering, vending machines and train condition monitoring. The API on MetronView can also be used by customers to draw data into existing platforms or develop their own portal.
