Powelectrics Were Riding High at the Inaugural ‘Rolling Stock Networking’ at Derby Velodrome

Posted on 12 Jul 2019

This week Powelectrics were proud to exhibit at the inaugural Rolling Stock Networking event! This brand new rail show had 130 exhibitors from the UK, Canada, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Sweden & the US. It offered a broad range of innovative technologies for freight and passenger rolling stock and eight industry speakers.

RSN was supported by a number of rail organisations including Rail Freight Group, Rail Alliance, Rail Forum Midlands, RSSB, Railway Industry Association and CIRAS and there were four trade events held on the day in the dramatic environs of Derby’s fabulous velodrome, where exhibitors were whizzed around by training champions during set-up!

The show was opened by Councillor Frank Harwood, Lord Mayor of Derby, who toured the exhibition, soon followed by many of the rail industry professionals based nearby and others who had travelled much further for this industry first.

Powelectrics showed live data for temperature, humidity and CO2 at the event using Sigfox LPWAN technology and our MetronView platform. We also showed live data from real rail condition monitoring projects to illustrate how IoT Industry 4.0 solutions can provide the knowledge needed to improve reliability, performance, safety and comfort.

These included track temperatures being monitored in the US to prevent derailment, fuel tank levels on Virgin East Coast trains to prevent run-outs and saloon temperature on First Great Western enabling performance monitoring of the HVAC system.

Powelectrics stand also showcased a bespoke engine temperature monitoring solution designed in partnership with Angel Trains.

Our visitors were primarily train leasing and operating companies, rail consultants, infrastructure and engineering companies. We were also delighted to welcome Maggie Simpson, Director General of the Rail Freight Group who was one of the expert speakers on the day, discussing current market trends, challenges, opportunities and disruptors.

Dave Oakes, MD said “Powelectrics were proud to be part of this inaugural event, which I am sure will become a popular fixture in the rail expo calendar. RSN really helped broaden our exposure in the rail industry, consolidating the knowledge and contacts we gained on the Porterbrook Innovation Hub at RailLive in June and brought us a good number of new enquiries and opportunities for collaboration. Well done to Kevin Lane and everyone involved in the organisation!”

Elements that can be monitored and are frequently discussed with us by ROSCOs and TOCs in relation to condition monitoring include:

•             Fuel & coolant level

•             Exhaust, charge air, oil, coolant, bearing and alternator temperatures

•             Saloon temperature, humidity, CO 2 & light level

•             Oil & air filter pressure

•             Oil quality (ferrous content)

•             Battery voltage & charger temperature

•             Vibration

•             Location (GPS/GNSS)

•             Toilets including level in header tank, CET level, toilet out of use

•             The length of time it takes for doors to open and close
