Pumping Up The Volume … of Water! Powelectrics Pump Station Condition Monitoring Solution Ensures Peak Performance!

Posted on 04 Feb 2019

Powelectrics deliver many water and wastewater M2M projects, from flood monitoring to pump control and monitoring levels in unadopted sewers and remote reservoirs.

We recently completed a project for a business that designs and installs clean pumping systems, UV filtration and sewage pumping stations. This bespoke Industry4.0 solution is a complete condition monitoring system for a pumping station. Water is pumped from a borehole through a set of tanks and filters. Powelectrics IoT technology is used to monitor tank level, pre and post filter pressure, faults on the UV filter and the inlet & outlet water flow. The data is sent hourly by our award-winning Metron2 telemetry device to Powelectrics MetronView cloud and authorised users receive data and alarms securely on any web-enabled device.

One feature which has really assisted with maintenance management is monitoring of the inlet water volume. The image here shows the volume of water pumped from the borehole. We count pulses to measure how many litres of water pass through. The graph shows the pump working efficiently with a new, clean filter. Over time, the filter gets blocked and the pumps need to work harder and longer to pump the same volume of water.

Our customer can now use telemetry to decide the most cost-effective time to clean or change the filter. Historical data will also allow them to predict when the filter will block in future and see regular data on the other key performance parameters, enabling them to maximise the time between maintenance visits. A low level alarm is also set up on the tank level indicates a potentially serious problem such as the borehole running dry or a complete pump failure and prompt immediate action to ensure a continued supply of clean water to the dependent properties.

Metron2 telemetry devices can be supplied for use with external power, integral battery and solar power. All Metron2 devices can be remotely configured via MetronView or set-up by us, prior to dispatch or simply configured on site, using the integral display. No programming skills are needed. Metron2 offers 4 analogue inputs, optional 5 pulse inputs and 2 optional relay outputs and they are supplied in a robust, weatherproof IP67 enclosure.

MetronView, is Powelectrics standalone platform, with customisable dashboards, reporting & alarms. MetronView processes millions of readings/day and supports over 140 protocols including MODBUS, MQTT, HTTP, TCP, UDP, SERIAL, SIGFOX, SNMP. It also has a simple API for integration to other platforms.
