Rags To Riches! Powelectrics Industry 4.0 Solution Installed to Help Recycle Unwanted Clothing

Posted on 29 Apr 2019

Each year the British public throw away over a million tonnes of textiles, the vast majority of which could be used or recycled …. clothes, shoes and household linen. Some get sent to charity shops, but its estimated that a third of clothes across the UK end up in the bin, despite the fact that stained, damaged and holey clothing can be recycled into new items, such as padding for chairs, cleaning cloths, industrial blankets, footwear uppers and soles … even upholstery on trains.

Powelectrics customer is one of many businesses regenerating this vast resource of discarded cloths and leathers and recycling them into brand new, usable products. Some recycling processes use strong chemicals to break down the original fibres and others involve the removal of additives in material being recycled.

Powelectrics IoT solution was installed on a tank with a viscous waste by-product, that could not be allowed to overspill for environmental reasons … not good …especially for a company with strong environmental aspirations!

Lack of capacity would also mean stopping production and letting down customers, who have production pressures of their own.

This Industry 4.0 installation used a Vegapuls 64 radar sensor, inserted via a flange into lid of the large tank and configured on site by Powelectrics installers using Bluetooth.

The sensor was connected to Powelectrics award-winning Metron2 m2m telemetry device. In this case, the device was configured on site. Powelectrics can also pre-configure telemetry units, if tank drawings or dimensions are supplied in advance. We can accommodate any size or shape of tank and have a large library of standard configurations based on historical installations.

This ‘connected sensor’ solution was set-up to report levels hourly to Powelectrics MetronView cloud, which offers customisable dashboards, reporting & alarms. Data is visible to multiple authorised users on any web-enabled device.

For this project, multiple user-defined high-level alarms were programmed. These are received by our customer and by their waste collection contractor, enabling them to plan efficient collections, to minimise disruption, whilst ensuring that the tank never completely fills or overspills.

Powelectrics MetronView platform is a highly secure and scalable IoT solution, currently processing millions of readings every day, whilst only using a fraction of its processing capabilities. MetronView supports over 140 protocols.

MetronView offers sufficient flexibility for many applications, but it also has a standard API for integration to other platforms and portals, so that greater application-specific functionality can be achieved. This can be done by customers or we can create portals for you. Examples include: tank management, energy metering, vending machines, train condition monitoring and waste compactors. MetronView can be used as middleware to interface with software such as Navision, SAP, SCADA systems or platforms such as IBM Cloud (Watson), Microsoft  Azure, AWS and Miimetiq.

Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Internet of Things. Our ‘connected sensor’ solutions are employed in many industries including chemical, pharmaceuticals, Adblue, fuels, oils, LPG, lubricants, food and beverage, waste &recycling, landfill & leachate, agriculture, utilities, pumping and environment, rail and security.
