Spotlight on EGE Sensors … and Their New IECEx Certified Signal Processing Units To Facilitate International Trade In Projects Involving Explosive Atmospheres

Posted on 14 Feb 2019

Powelectrics are the sole UK distributors for the EGE-Elektronik Spezial-Sensoren GmbH.

EGE have been developing and manufacturing special purpose sensors for automation applications since 1976. With 89 employees and international sales approaching 20 million Euros, their portfolio includes flow controllers, infrared, opto and ultrasonic sensors, capacitive proximity switches, light barriers and inductive proximity switches. EGE also provides sensors for highly sensitive applications, e.g. hazardous areas.

The EGE is extensive and covers sensors that can withstand extremes of temperature (-230 to +250) and pressure as well as devices for ATEX environments. Sensors are available in a wide range of materials to suit corrosive and other extreme applications. These include hastelloy, tantalum and Teflon (PTFE). EGE are willing to adapt products to specific applications without a commitment to large volumes and often on a one-off basis.

EGE are constantly innovating, embracing IO-Link and proving solutions for evolving markets.

The most recent product release is IECEx-certified signal processing units for their growing range IECEx-approved two-wire sensors. This certification greatly facilitates exporting the intrinsically safe sensors to many countries around the world – machine manufacturers and plant engineers can now use them in applications where they were previously barred or had to be specially certified at great effort and cost.

The type IKMb 122 Ex signal processing units connect to intrinsically safe EGE two-wire sensors for hazardous gas and dust atmospheres. They feature a space-saving, 22 mm wide DIN rail housing and are installed outside the hazardous area. Green, yellow, and red LEDs on the front side indicate the operating status and signal alarms, if the integrated cable breakage detection or the short-circuit monitoring is triggered. The output can be set as normally closed or normally opened.

The IECEx System is an international system for the safety of equipment installed in a potentially explosive atmosphere. It stands for International Electrotechnical Commission system for Certification to Standards relating to equipment for use in Explosive Atmospheres.

Powelectrics connect the world of sensors as our own m2m telemetry devices and IoT cloud with a common API for integration into other platforms.

Our Industry 4.0 solutions are employed in a wide range of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) remote level and condition monitoring applications. We welcome the opportunity to discuss your application: +44 1827 310 666
